If total visible light is absorbed, the color will be black.
• Origin of color:
excitation of e- from one energy state to another that is
(i) Lower energy state to excited(higher) energy state.
(ii) Higher energy state to lower energy state.It is mainly due to the following ways:
(i) d-d transition
(ii) charge transfer
(iii) solid defects
• d-d transition:
Excitation of electron from lower energy state (t2g in case of octahedral and e in case of tetrahedral ) to higher energy state(eg in case of tetrahedral and t2g in case of tetrahedral) is called d-d transition.
